Some of these are actually legendary creatures and characters from folktales. Gensokyo is actually a fictional representation of feudal Japan, and it is populated by all kinds of creatures. Both the Touhou Project titles and Eratohok take place in a fictional world called Gensokyo, a magical world sealed off from the rest of the earth through a magic barrier. Since there are no visuals, your imagination will have to work extra hours in here, but the game is actually based in the setting of the Touhou Project games. The graphics actually reflect those of old DOS games. It's more similar to text-based adventures than it is from any other game, at least in the visuals.
This goes back to a time before the visuals were the main type of games. Saying that this game looks and plays like retro and old school gaming wouldn't be enough.
